Biggleswade Alcohol Free Zone

The Local Authorities (Alcohol Consumption in Public Places) Regulations 2001, as set out under the Criminal Justices and Police Act 2001 is one of the key provisions recognised as tackling alcohol related disorder.

The creation of Alcohol Designation Order (ADO) in a neighbourhood does not prevent persons from drinking out of doors on properly licensed premises. However any person who may reasonably be believed to be drinking alcohol off licensed premises, in a Designated area, shall upon the instruction of a Police Constable or Police Community Support Officer, surrender the alcohol for disposal. Failure to comply leads to an offence for which a fine can imposed and more importantly an individual who refuses to comply may be arrested.

The zone should be marked with the appropriate signage as you enter the zones as well as reminder signs within the zone.

Main signs were erected at the junction of Shortmead Street/Sun Street, Junction of Mill Lane/St. Andrew Street/Teal Road. Station approach/depot. Dells Lane / Mead End (north end), junction. London Road / Dells Lane/ The Baulk / Chestnut Avenue junction. Entrance to Franklin Recreation ground entrance. Teal Road / Hitchin Street junction.

Repeat signs were erected at Station Road / High Street, Church Street, Shortmead Street, Rose Lane, Sun Street, Crab Lane, Saffron Rd, Foundry Lane, Bonds Lane, Brunts Lane and in the recreation ground.

These signs seem to be very “collectable”. The following pictures were taken some three or four years ago.
