Officers investigating an assault in a supermarket car park in Biggleswade yesterday (Saturday Aug 3) can confirm that the 64-year-old victim has died.
The victim, from Sandy, had been taken to Addenbrookes Hospital after being involved in an altercation at 3pm on Saturday at the... Asda supermarket car park in Biggleswade. His family was with him when he died this afternoon (Sunday 4 Aug).
Detectives have rearrested the 65-year-old man who was already in custody for manslaughter, and continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
DCI Tim Redfearn from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation:
“We are now treating this man’s death as manslaughter”, he said, “and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the altercation take place between these two men at around 3pm. on Saturday 3rd August in the Asda car park to contact us.
The men were waiting in the disabled parking area at the time and got into a disagreement about parking. We know they became involved in a disagreement which resulted in one man punching the other knocking him to the ground. It would seem an argument over nothing has led to tragic and devastating consequences for both men and their families. I know the supermarket car park would have been very busy on a Saturday afternoon so if you were there at the relevant time please contact the police in confidence.”
The offender, aged 65, left the supermarket immediately afterwards but was arrested at his home address nearby a short time later and taken to Greyfriars Police Station in Bedford where he is being questioned.
Anyone with information relating to this incident can contact Bedfordshire Police on 101, or text information to 07786 200011.
Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
