A scam is a scheme designed to con you out of your cash or personal details.
There's a scam out there for everyone. If you let down your guard and think that you won't be fooled, then you to could become a victim.
Scams are becoming more and more sophisticated, some are aimed at the elderly and vulnerable and others aimed to con us all. They come in a variety of forms, by post, by telephone, by email or even by doorstep calling. Bogus prize draws and lotteries, get-rich-quick schemes, deceptive premium rate telephone numbers, fake health cures and bogus tax rebates are just some of the favoured means of separating the unwary from their money. And the number of new scams from the UK and overseas keeps on growing every day, so it is important to know how to recognise one.
The Metropolitan Police have produced The Little Book of Big Scams (PDF 3.7MB) to help increase consumer awareness of the many types of scams currently operating in the UK. (an audio version can also be downloaded at the Met Police website)
