Changes to personal details on Electoral Register

DO YOU WANT TO PROTECT YOUR ELECTORAL REGISTRATION DETAILS?

DO YOU WANT TO STOP COMMERCIAL COMPANIES HAVING ACCESS TO YOUR DETAILS ON THE ELECTORAL REGISTER?

Until 2002, any company or organisation could buy a copy of the electoral register. However, the law has since changed so that you have a choice as to whether your name and address is made available to be purchased. From 1st December 2002 two versions of the electoral register were introduced - the full register and the edited register.

The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.  The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked them to be excluded from that version of the register.  Currently  117,000 within Central Bedfordshire Council are have requested their name and address to be excluded from the edited version of the register.

In October this year there will be changes to the way that electors can protect their details on the electoral register in case they do not want them sold to third parties.

In the past we carried over requests to be excluded from the edited register, but we will no longer be allowed to do this. If you want to have your details permanently excluded from the edited register you can write to us at Priory House, Monks Walk, Chicksands SG17 5TQ or email us at electoral.registration@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk making a permanent opt-out request.

Please ensure that you state your full name and address and that you wish your details to be excluded from the edited register on a permanent basis or until further notice.

A separate request is required for each member of the household if they also wish to be permanently omitted from the edited register.

Permanent Opt Out

You can permanently opt out of the Edited Register by completing and signing this *Permanent Opt Out application form (PDF 6KB) and sending it to the Electoral Services Team; or

You can email electoral.registration@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk stating your name and address along with the message:

"Please do not include my details in the next and future versions of the edited register.  This will apply until I tell you otherwise".

Note: A separate form (or email) is required for each individual on the Electoral Register.

Annual Opt Out

The edited version of the register is available for general sale but you can choose to have your details omitted from it by "opting out". You can do this by ticking the relevant box on the annual canvass form, application to register form or by contacting the electoral services team.
