Free car checks for local drivers - Biggleswade Tuesday 29th April 2014.

Drivers are again being offered the chance to ensure that their cars are in good condition by taking them for a free check, courtesy of the Bedfordshire and Luton Casualty Reduction Partnership. The award winning event, first held at the end of 2013, has so far seen 370 vehicles being checked. The partnership is offering free checks in April for any drivers who missed out.

Events have been held in Luton on 22 and 23 April and will be happening in Central Bedfordshire from 11 - 6pm on the following dates:

Sainsburys in Biggleswade on the 29 April 2014
• Sainsburys in Dunstable on the 30 April 2014

All vehicle checks will be performed by a group of specialists from the companies Autohome (breakdown) ProTyres/MichelDever (tyre supplier and fitter) and Autoglass
(repair and replacement windscreens).

Cars will have their tyre pressures and treads checked, along with lights, windscreen wipers and fluids.

Cllr Budge Wells, Deputy Executive Member for Sustainable Communities from Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “As a motorist you can do some very simple things to ensure your vehicle is safe, including checking tyre pressures each month, making sure that all of the lights in your vehicle work and that tyre tread is at least 1.6mm deep across the central three-quarters of the tread.

“The free vehicle checks taking place in April are a great opportunity to make sure your car is safe and road legal. I would really encourage everyone to take advantage of these, rather than finding out later and facing a fine, or even worse having an accident.”

Road safety officers will be available at each event to offer advice, and everyone who attends will receive a free drivers’ pack containing high visibility vest, ice scraper, an emergency foil blanket and tyre depth gauge along with advice regarding driving safely.

Help prevent illegal raves

Illegal raves cause a variety of problems - noise, anti social behaviour, damage to property/environment, disruption, litter, drugs, theft and vehicle offences.

Help us by reporting:
  • rave advertisements on flyers, posters or on social media - they may be advertised as "safe" or "drug free" when this isn't the case!
  • car convoys or groups gathering in rural, derelict locations or at service stations
  • increased traffic in rural areas, particularly when dark
  • suspicious changes to farm buildings, broken gates or padlocks where a rave could take place.
  • If you own land or a rural business, lock all buildings and gates. If you cannot secure land with a gate, temporarily block entrances to prevent unwanted vehicle access.

Bedfordshire Police will not tolerate illegal raves and will seize equipment and make arrests. Call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 to report.

London Road Retail Park, Biggleswade - another branch of Boots?

Boots

It has been reported this week that a second branch of Boots could open up in Biggleswade.

LXB Retail Properties, the owners of London Road Retail Park have submitted a planning application to Central Bedfordshire Council, requesting permission to vary a condition of a previous planning application to allow a pharmacy to operate from part of Unit B.

In the application it states " The application seeks to vary condition 21 of the planning permission CB/13/04399/VOC to allow a pharmacy to operate from Unit B. The Unit is due to be occupied by Boots, who are taking a long term lease on the premises and therefore need to have the comfort that at some point they can have the ability to operate a pharmacy if they feel it would work and they are able to obtain a licence."
