Bank Phishing email reminder

The Trading Standards team would like to remind consumers and small businesses to act on the side of caution whenever they receive an email purporting to be from their bank, building society or credit card company.

When receiving such an email, a few basic checks could save you some significant inconvenience at a later date.

It is common practice for some scam artists to send “phishing” emails, purporting to be from a bank in an attempt to gain personal information. Generally, these types of emails claim that due to a “
database update”
or “for security reasons”
or similar, they need you to confirm your personal details and will ask you to click on an attached web-link in order to provide them. (Please see an example recently forwarded to us, supposedly from NatWest – the person who received the email doesn’t even have an account with this bank!)

At first glance, such emails appear to be genuine, but take a moment to look for a few clues that may tell otherwise. Check the email address of the sender - banks do not use ‘hotmail.com’ / ‘gmail.com’ types of email addresses. Emails addressed “
Dear Valued Customer” or similar and not to you personally, are very likely to be part of a scam. Finally, check for simple spelling mistakes or unusual grammar.

If you ever receive what you think is a “phishing” email, our advice is;

- never reply, this will only alert the sender that your email address is active;
- never open any attachments or click on any web-links;
- never provide any personal information or account details;
- never be intimidated into replying (for example, if it is claimed you may be denied access to your account if you do not reply);
- if you are unsure whether the email is genuine or not, contact your bank directly to check whether they have sent it;
- report the email to your bank, by forwarding it to them (please visit your bank’s website to find out if they have a specific email address for reporting “phishing” emails, most banks will have);
- finally, delete the email from your computer.

Urgent message from Northants police

Below is a copy of information sent to the Beds, Essex & Herts Methodist District Office by the Northants police.

There has been a series of Frauds committed in the Northampton and Milton Keynes areas over recent weeks using precisely the same method.

The offender targets church members, approaching people at or outside churches or church halls appearing upset and frantic for help. He tells them that his mother has died that morning on the island of Jersey and that he is in desperate need of funds to get out there to identify the body and bring her home.

He explains that his mother was a member of their church and lived locally until recently.

He quotes the details of several of the churches local ministers to add validity to his story but these people happen to be on holiday at the time so it appears that he has done some preparatory research.

He is described as follows:
White Male aged 30-35 years
5’4” to 5’8” tall with a slim build
Fair hair cut about ear length

Last seen wearing a blue hoody with white writing and dark jeans

This male is EXTREMELY plausible, cries when recalling memories of his mother, gives his name as ‘John WILLIAMS’ and passes a mobile phone number when asked. He will even quote addresses that are local.

Please can details of this crime series be circulated among the Church community, encouraging any persons who come across this male to call 999 immediately?

Anyone who has any information regarding this man can call the Police non emergency number on 101

Be Scam Aware - PayPal "phishing" scam

The Trading Standards team is warning consumers and small businesses, especially those subscribed with PayPal, to be aware of a potential email phishing scam.

We have been forwarded a suspicious email (see below) recently received by a concerned consumer. At first glance, the email appears to be genuine and confirms the payment for a subscription to Skype, which the recipient may have no knowledge of and then start to query the transaction.

However, in reality no such a transaction has taken place, as the email is designed to get the recipient to click on an attached web-link in order to seek a “
refund”. Having followed this link, the recipient will then be asked to provide or “confirm” various bank / credit card and personal details.

This email has all the hallmarks of a phishing scam and our advice is, if you receive one of these emails, please act with caution.

Firstly, do not reply to the email, as this may alert the sender that your email address is currently active and you may be targeted by future email scams. Do not open any attached documents or click on web-links, as these may contain viruses that may harm your computer.
Finally, never provide your personal or bank account details without checking whether the email is genuine or if unsure of the sender’s intentions.

If you have doubts as to whether an email is actually from PayPal or not, report it by forwarding to
spoof@paypal.com and then delete the email from your computer.

Biggleswade Town Council Meetings & Minutes

At the last Biggleswade Town Council Meeting on Tuesday 28th August 2012 it was agreed by Members to hold two Council meetings per month. The first meeting to be held on the second Tuesday of the month and the second meeting to be held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. This would remove the Planning Committee from the schedule of meetings.

You will find out about this eventually if the Town Council ever publish the minutes on the web site.

On the Town Council web site all future Planning Meetings have been changed to Council Meetings. It is "unfortunate" that the web site Noticeboard still shows a Planning Meeting to be held on 11th September 2012.

The Council meeting of Sunday 23rd September 2012 is still shown on the meetings list, although the Noticeboard is now showing Tuesday 25th September 2012.

The web site is still missing the minutes of:

15th November 2011, F&GP Meeting
15th May 2012 , Off Street Car Parking

Still not on the meeting list, so no minutes published:

27th March 2012 , Public Land & Open Spaces Meeting

Council Meeting Minutes of 24th July 2012, have been published as "Provisional" even though there has been another Council meeting since then, at which I would have thought they would have been approved.

Watch this space, it can only get worse!!!

With a read receipt request to all.

____________________________________________________________

"Do you think we could have some minutes of this financial years meetings published please?
I think by now, these ones at least should be published on the web site:
15th May 2012 – Off Street Car Parking
12th June 2012 – Planning
26th June 2012 – Council
10th July 2012 – Planning
and what about the minutes of the F&GP Meeting held on 15th November 2011,
and the minutes of the Public Land & Open Spaces Meeting held on 27th March 2012. This is not even on the meetings list. I brought this fact to your attention on 7th March 2012, 31st March 2012 & 29th April 2012 but have never received any response from you.
Is the Council really going to meet on Sunday 23rd September 2012 as published on the web site? I have not pointed this out before in view of the response I got the last time, when I brought an “odd” meeting date to your attention."

_________________________________________

During this week, the minutes of the 12th June 2012 – Planning, 26th June 2012 – Council & 10th July 2012 – Planning have been published.

That leaves with us with the minutes of 15th May 2012 – Off Street Car Parking, F&GP Meeting 15th November 2011, and Public Land & Open Spaces Meeting held on 27th March 2012 still to be published. Together with the Public Land & Open Spaces Meeting held on 27th March 2012 to be added to the meeting list and whether Council will be meeting on Sunday 23rd September 2012 as published on the web site.

So far the only response I have had are read receipts from Rob McGregor & George Wilson.

Ringmaster - County - Claim Back Your Valuables at Cambridge Open Day - Saturday 8th September 2012.

About 200 items of suspected stolen property will be on show at an open day for victims of burglary.

Valuables including watches, rings, necklace, pendants and even trophies, which are believed to have been stolen in burglaries across the region, will be on display at Parkside Police Station* between 1pm and 6pm on Saturday 8 September.

The property was seized on 4 April in Cambridge, but detectives believe it could have come from homes across Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk or other neighbouring counties.

Detective Sergeant Chris Tatum-Horsfield said: "If you have had valuables stolen during a burglary in the 12 months leading up to April this year, I would urge you to come along to the open day.

"Officers will be on hand to show the seized items and hopefully reunite victims with their property."
The property will be on display in the property office at the side of the police station.

- where people can claim their property.

Visit the CambsCops Facebook page and click on the gallery to view all of the items. People can email a designated mailbox OpRobbin@cambs.pnn.police.uk to claim any of the property.
